-
- do not forget, the 'connect speed' message is meaningless, what
- matters the most is the data throughput. It is up to the code
- developer and marketing (USR) deciding about whether
- - it is better to impress the end user with high numbers when it
- comes to connect speed message but have the data full of garbage and
- the data transfer with many packet retransmissions or
- - if it is better to eat the pride and connect 26.4k right from the
- start while suffering from no errors, thus delivering the target
- file eventually faster than at error-ridden 28.8k!
-
- furthermore, you can connect at 28.8 and see that reported when the
- initial handshake is over. Soon after your modem may renegotiate the
- rate or retrain and fallback, which fact is completely hidden from
- the end user who continues to blindly believe the entire connection
- for 1 hour was at the same speed as the initial message. Not quite
- so! You might get some clues about what is going on if you have a
- better modem equipped with a display or on-line diagnostics in
- command mode.
